São Paulo Landfill Methane Recovery

This project installs gas collection and utilisation systems at three large municipal solid waste landfills serving the greater São Paulo metropolitan area. Vertical and horizontal gas wells extract landfill gas (approximately 50% methane, 50% CO₂), which is cleaned and fed into 12MW of electricity generation capacity. Methane is 28x more potent as a greenhouse gas than CO₂ over a 100-year period, making its capture and destruction one of the most impactful near-term climate interventions.

The generated electricity is fed into the Brazilian grid, displacing fossil fuel generation. Leachate treatment systems also prevent groundwater contamination in surrounding communities.
